Souzão is known for its intense flavors and color, a trait that unusually comes from both its skin and juice. The grape is a Portuguese varietal that commonly is blended into Port, where its addition adds acidity and spice to the fortified wine. The natural acidity in the Souzão grape produces wine with aggressive flavors, and tasting notes include such flavors as wild black currant, licorice and spice.
While native to the Minho region of Portugal, the grape has also found a foothold among wineries in both California and Western Australia.
